Golf colors: how to match a polo with pants

Three golfers in navy, white and black polos with gray, navy and stone pants

Golf outfits look best when they are simple. Most well-dressed golfers follow the same rule: neutrals on the bottom, one color on top, and nothing fighting for attention.

Start with neutral pants#

Navy, gray, khaki, black, olive and white are the backbone of a golf wardrobe. Each goes with several polo colors, so a few pairs cover a whole season of rounds.

Polo and pants pairings#

Navy pants: white, light gray, red or forest green polos.

Gray pants: navy, black, white or cardinal.

Khaki or stone pants: navy, white, forest green or black.

Black pants: white, red or gray.

Olive pants: white, navy or black.

One accent at a time#

If your polo is bold, keep the hat and layer neutral. If you want color in the cap or the layer, keep the polo plain. One accent looks deliberate; three looks busy.

Matching the hat and layer#

A cap that matches either your shirt or your pants ties the outfit together. A navy, black or forest green layer goes over almost any polo.

Belt and shoes#

Match your belt roughly to your shoes, or keep both neutral. White golf shoes go with nearly everything.

Questions#

What color pants go with a navy golf polo?

Gray, khaki, stone and white are classic with navy. Navy on navy works if the two shades are clearly different.

Can you wear all black on a golf course?

Most courses have no color rules, so yes. All black looks sharp, though it can feel hot in strong summer sun.

Should my cap match my polo?

It doesn't have to. A cap that matches either your shirt or your pants is the easiest way to look put-together.
