Big and tall golf polos: how to find the right fit

The Ninth Polo in black, offered in sizes S to 5XL

Plenty of golf brands stop at XL or 2XL, which leaves a lot of golfers wearing whatever fits rather than what they like. Finding a good fit in bigger sizes is mostly about measuring, not guessing.

Measure a shirt you already like#

Lay your favorite polo flat, smooth it out and measure straight across the chest, 1 inch below the armholes. Then measure the length from the top of the shoulder to the hem. Compare both numbers with the garment chart rather than relying on the size label.

Brands size differently, so a 3XL in one may match a 2XL or 4XL in another. The garment measurements are the only fair comparison.

Shoulders and chest first#

If the shoulders fit, most other things can be lived with. A polo that is tight across the back pulls on the backswing; one that is far too big drops the shoulder seam down your arm and looks sloppy at address.

A relaxed cut gives room through the body without needing to size up. The Ninth Polo has a relaxed fit that runs large, so if you are between sizes, size down.

Length for taller golfers#

Raise your arms overhead. If the hem lifts above your belt, the shirt won't stay tucked through a full swing. Taller golfers who wear polos untucked should still check the hem covers the belt when standing.

Sizes across the range#

The Ninth Polo comes in S to 5XL. The Clubhouse Hoodie runs XS to 4XL, though not every color is offered in XS or 4XL. The Pine Half-Zip goes from XS to 3XL, the Clubhouse Crew and 19th Hole Jogger from S to 3XL, and The Turn Anorak from S to 2XL.

For a layer worn over a polo, check that the layer's chest measurement leaves a little room over the shirt underneath.

Keep the look simple#

Solid colors, a small chest logo and a collar that keeps its shape look sharp at any size. Darker pants with a lighter or brighter polo is an easy, classic combination.

Questions#

What size does the Ninth Polo go up to?

The Ninth Polo comes in S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL and 5XL. It has a relaxed fit that runs large, so size down if you are between sizes.

How do I choose a size if I'm between two?

Measure the flat chest width of a shirt you like and compare it with the garment chart. For the Ninth Polo, which runs large, the smaller size is usually the better pick.

Do big and tall golfers need a longer shirt?

Often, yes. Raise your arms overhead; if the hem lifts above your belt, look for a longer body or a size with more length.
