Golf joggers vs golf pants: which should you wear?

The 19th Hole Jogger in black worn with white sneakers

Joggers have become a common sight at the range and on many first tees, but tailored golf pants are still the standard at plenty of clubs. The right pick depends less on fashion and more on where you are playing.

The main difference#

Golf pants have a waistband with belt loops, a straight or slim leg and a flat front, so they look like dress pants. Joggers have an elastic waistband, a tapered leg and a cuffed ankle, so they look more relaxed.

Dress codes#

Most public courses and ranges are fine with clean, solid joggers. Many private clubs ask for tailored pants with belt loops, and some specifically say no sweatpants or athletic pants. If the dress code mentions slacks or golf pants, check with the pro shop before wearing joggers.

Weather and comfort#

A heavyweight fleece jogger is a comfortable choice on cold mornings and for the drive home. On hot days, most golfers reach for lighter tailored pants or shorts instead.

How each one looks#

Tailored pants work with any polo and a belt, and look right in a clubhouse dining room. Joggers look best in solid neutral colors with a collared polo or a half-zip on top, so the outfit stays on the golf side of casual.

Why many golfers own both#

A pair of tailored golf pants covers private clubs, member events and client rounds. A pair of joggers covers the range, simulators, casual nine-hole rounds and cool mornings at relaxed courses.

Questions#

Are golf joggers allowed on most courses?

Most public courses and ranges are fine with solid, clean joggers. Private clubs vary, so check the dress code or call the pro shop.

Do I need a belt with golf pants?

Many clubs expect a belt when pants have belt loops. Joggers have an elastic waistband, so a belt isn't needed.

What should I wear with golf joggers?

A collared polo or a half-zip over a polo, in a simple color that goes with the joggers, plus a cap that matches one of them.
