Can you wear a T-shirt golfing?

The Ninth Polo in red

Sometimes. T-shirts are common on driving ranges, simulators and relaxed municipal courses, and much less welcome at private clubs and resorts.

Where a T-shirt is usually fine#

Driving ranges, simulators, par-3 courses and many public courses with relaxed rules. A plain, clean tee looks better than a graphic one, and tucking it in helps.

Where you will need a collar#

Most private clubs and many resort and semi-private courses ask for a collared shirt. Mock necks are accepted at more courses than they used to be, but not everywhere. If the dress code says collared shirts are required, a tee won't do.

Why the polo stays the default#

A polo is the one shirt accepted almost everywhere, and it goes from the first tee to the clubhouse to dinner without a change. If you only own one golf shirt, make it a polo.

A middle ground#

If you prefer tees, keep a polo in the car for courses that ask for a collar. On cool days, a crewneck over a polo, collar out, gives you the relaxed look and still meets the rule.

Questions#

Are T-shirts allowed on golf courses?

At some public courses and most ranges, yes. Many private clubs and resorts require a collared shirt, so check the dress code first.

Is a mock neck allowed instead of a polo?

Many courses now accept mock necks, but some private clubs still require a traditional collar. Ask the pro shop if you are unsure.

Why do golf courses require collared shirts?

It is a long-standing tradition that clubs keep to set the tone of the course. Each course decides its own policy.
