Should you tuck in your golf shirt?
Illustrative imageThe short answer: Tuck it in at private clubs and anywhere the dress code asks for it; at many public courses and ranges an untucked polo with a straight hem is fine.
Tucked or untucked is one of the most common golf clothing questions, and the answer depends more on the course than on the shirt. Here is how to read the rules, and how to choose a polo that works both ways.
What courses usually expect#
Many private clubs ask for shirts tucked in on the course, and some say so in the dress code. Plenty of public courses, resorts and driving ranges are relaxed about it. If you are a guest, check the club website or call the pro shop, and tuck in if in doubt. The golf dress code guide has the common rules.
Hems that look right untucked#
A straight hem with side slits sits flat when you wear a polo out, like the hem on the Ninth Cotton Polo. A polo that is long at the back, with a curved tail, is cut to be tucked in and can look untidy worn out.
Keeping it tucked through a round#
Length is what keeps a shirt tucked. Raise both arms over your head in front of a mirror: if the hem comes up above your belt, it will pull out on the backswing. A belt worn a little firmer and a polo in your true size help more than any trick. How a golf polo should fit covers the length check in more detail.
Off the course#
At the range, the simulator or the bar after, wear it however you like. A polo with side slits is the easiest way to own one shirt that works both ways.
