What to wear as a guest at a private golf club
AI illustrationBeing invited to play a private club is a treat, and dressing the part is part of being a good guest. Rules vary from club to club, but the same few points come up again and again.
Ask your host first#
Your host knows the rules, including the unwritten ones. A quick message about shirts, shorts, shoes and the clubhouse saves any awkwardness at the bag drop.
Collared and tucked#
A collared polo, tucked in, with a belt is the safe standard. Many private clubs require a collar and expect shirts to be tucked in on the course.
Pants or shorts#
Tailored golf pants or chinos are always fine. Many clubs allow tailored shorts, though some specify a length or have different rules for the clubhouse. Denim and athletic shorts are rarely allowed.
Caps and the clubhouse#
Wear your cap facing forward on the course and take it off when you go inside, especially in the dining room. Some clubs also have rules about phone use in the clubhouse.
Shoes and layers#
Golf shoes are the expected choice at many private clubs; some guests change in the locker room, others at the car, so follow your host's lead. For layers, a half-zip, quarter-zip or sweater over a polo is the safe option. Leave the hoodie for another day.
Staying for lunch or dinner#
A clean polo and pants usually work for lunch or a drink after the round. Some clubs have dressier dining rooms in the evening, so check with your host if you are staying.
Questions#
Do you have to tuck in your shirt at a private golf club?
Many private clubs expect shirts tucked in on the course and in the clubhouse. Ask your host if you are unsure.
Can I wear a hoodie at a private club?
Some private clubs don't allow hoodies on the course. A half-zip or sweater over a polo is the safer choice as a guest.
Should a guest wear golf shoes?
At many private clubs, yes. Spikeless golf shoes are widely accepted; ask your host whether guests usually change in the locker room.
