What to wear golfing for the first time
AI illustrationYour first round has enough to think about without wondering whether you are dressed right. A beginner's golf outfit is short and simple, and you may already own most of it.
The four-piece outfit#
A collared polo, golf pants or chinos (or tailored shorts in warm weather), a belt and a cap. That combination is accepted at most US courses, from municipal tracks to resorts.
Keep the colors simple. A solid polo over neutral pants always looks right, whatever your score.
Shoes#
You don't need golf shoes for a first round. Clean sneakers with a flat, grippy sole are fine at most public courses. Most courses no longer allow metal spikes, and some private clubs prefer golf shoes, so check if you are someone's guest.
What to leave at home#
Denim, athletic shorts, tank tops and graphic T-shirts are the items most often listed as not allowed. Rules vary, but if you avoid those you will fit in almost anywhere.
Bring a layer#
A round takes four hours or more, and the weather can change in that time. A half-zip or crewneck over your polo covers a cool start and comes off when the sun does its work.
Check before you go#
Look for a dress code on the course website or call the pro shop. Your playing partners will usually know the course too, so ask them.
Questions#
Do I need golf shoes for my first round?
No. Clean sneakers with a flat, grippy sole work at most public courses. Some private clubs prefer golf shoes, so ask your host or the pro shop if you are a guest.
Can I wear jeans to play golf?
Most courses with a dress code list denim as not allowed. Golf pants, chinos or tailored shorts are the safe choice.
Do I have to tuck in my polo?
Many courses ask for shirts to be tucked in, especially private clubs. Public courses are often more relaxed. If in doubt, tuck it in.
