What to wear to a member-guest golf tournament

A member-guest is often the biggest weekend on a private club's calendar. As a guest, you are representing your host, so the goal is to look sharp, follow the rules and enjoy the event without second-guessing your outfit.

Follow the host club's dress code#

Ask your host for the club's dress code, or check the club's website. Most private clubs expect a collared shirt tucked in, tailored pants or shorts, a belt and golf shoes, with denim not allowed on the course.

Some clubs have their own rules about hats indoors, shorts length or cell phones, so it is worth asking before the first day.

Plan one outfit per round#

Member-guests often run over two or three days with several rounds or matches. Pack a fresh polo for each round, plus one spare, and a layer for early tee times.

Coordinating with your partner#

Many teams like to wear matching or complementary colors. A simple approach is the same polo color each day, with each player choosing his own pants. Agree on colors a few weeks ahead so nobody is stuck ordering at the last minute.

Keep it understated: solid colors and small chest logos look better in photos than loud prints.

Dinners and parties#

Evening events at member-guests range from casual to jacket required. Ask your host what people usually wear. A crisp polo or button-down with tailored pants covers most nights; pack a sport coat if your host suggests it.

Small things that help#

Bring two caps, spare gloves and a golf towel. Take your cap off indoors, especially in the dining room, where many clubs expect it.

Questions#

Do member-guest partners have to match?

No, but many teams choose to. Matching polo colors each day is the simplest way to coordinate.

Can I wear shorts at a member-guest?

Most clubs allow tailored golf shorts on the course, but some have length rules. Ask your host or check the club's dress code.

What should I wear to the member-guest dinner?

It depends on the club. Ask your host; a polo or button-down with tailored pants covers most dinners, and some clubs expect a jacket.
