How to pack golf clothes in a carry-on
AI illustrationIf your clubs are going in a travel bag, the last thing you want is a second large suitcase. A golf weekend fits in a carry-on with a simple outfit formula and a few packing habits.
The outfit formula#
For a two- or three-round weekend: one polo per round, two pairs of pants or shorts in neutral colors, one mid layer, one cap and one knit beanie if the mornings are cold. Choose polos that all go with both bottoms and every combination works.
Pick a tight color palette#
Two neutrals on the bottom, such as gray and navy, and polos in white, navy, black or one accent color. A navy or black layer goes over all of them.
Wear the bulkiest pieces on the plane#
Travel in your heaviest layer and your bulkiest pants, and carry your cap. That frees most of the space in the bag for polos and shoes.
Pack shoes and caps carefully#
Put golf shoes in a shoe bag and stuff the toes with socks and a glove. Stack a structured cap crown-down with rolled socks inside so it keeps its shape. Roll polos rather than folding them to save space and limit creases.
Check the details#
Airlines have their own size limits for carry-ons and rules for golf bags, so check yours before you fly. Remember the toiletries limit for sunscreen in a carry-on, or plan to buy it when you arrive.
Questions#
How many polos should I pack for a golf weekend?
One per round is usually enough if you rewear one for dinner. Add a spare if the weather is hot.
How do I pack a golf cap so it keeps its shape?
Stack it crown-down in the bag and fill the inside with rolled socks so it can't be crushed.
What should I wear on the plane to a golf trip?
Your bulkiest layer and pants. It saves space in the bag and the layer is handy on a cool plane.
