What to wear golfing in hot weather

The Ninth Polo in white, a summer staple

On a hot day the best golf outfit is the one you stop noticing by the third hole. No shirt changes the weather, but the cut, the color and a few habits on the course make a real difference to how the round feels.

Choose a relaxed cut#

A polo that skims your body rather than clinging to it is more comfortable on a hot day and doesn't pull across your back when you turn. Size for a full swing, not a snug look.

Go lighter on color#

Lighter colors such as white tend to feel less hot in direct sun than black or navy. White and pale shades are also the classic summer look on the course.

Pick the knit#

Pique has a textured surface with more body than smooth jersey, and it holds a collar shape through a long day. The fabric weight on the product page helps you compare: lighter knits for summer, heavier ones for layering in cooler months.

Hat and sunscreen#

A cap shades your eyes and face and cuts the glare when you are tracking the ball. It doesn't cover your ears or the back of your neck, so put sunscreen there and reapply at the turn.

Use the shade#

Stand in the shade while others play, carry more water than you think you need, and keep a damp towel on the cart or bag for your face and grips. An early or late tee time avoids the hottest hours of the day.

Questions#

Can I wear shorts to play golf in summer?

At most courses, yes, as long as they are tailored golf shorts. Some private clubs set a length, so check the dress code.

Should I wear a white or a dark polo in the heat?

Lighter colors generally feel less hot in direct sun, which is why white is a summer favorite on the course.

Cap or visor for a hot round?

A visor leaves the top of your head open; a cap covers it from the sun. Many golfers in hot climates wear a cap for that reason.
