What to wear golfing in winter
Illustrative imageWinter golf can be quiet, crisp and some of the most enjoyable of the year, as long as you are warm enough to swing. Below about 45°F the plan changes from one layer to three, and warm hands become the priority.
Base: a polo with a long-sleeve layer#
Start with a close-fitting long-sleeve base under your polo, or a long-sleeve polo on its own. Keep it close to the body so nothing bunches under the layers on top.
Mid: a heavyweight half-zip or crew#
A heavy fleece half-zip is the workhorse of winter golf. The zip lets you open the neck between holes, and the collar covers your neck when it is zipped. A crewneck over a polo, collar out, works too.
Outer: a light shell on the coldest days#
On a raw, breezy day, a light pullover shell over your mid layer adds one more layer you can take off later. Size it to go over everything underneath so your turn isn't restricted.
Head and hands#
A knit beanie is the easiest warmth upgrade in golf. Winter golf gloves, or mitts you pull on between shots, and a couple of hand warmers in your pocket help you keep feel in your hands.
Pants, shoes and frost delays#
Wear heavier golf pants, or a thermal layer underneath, with warm socks and shoes that grip on frosty grass.
Many courses hold tee times until frost has lifted to protect the greens. Check the course's frost policy and keep a warm layer handy for the wait.

What temperature is too cold for golf?
There is no single rule; it depends on wind, sun and how you dress. Many courses stay open in cold weather but delay or close for frost, snow or frozen greens, so check with the course.
Are hoodies allowed on the course in winter?
Many public courses are fine with them, while some private clubs prefer a collared layer. A half-zip over a polo is the safe choice.
Should I size up my winter golf layers?
Size for what goes underneath. A half-zip cut to go over a polo usually needs no change; if you add a thick base layer, try your usual size with it on first.
