What is a golf windbreaker, and when should you wear one?
Illustrative imageA windbreaker is a light woven shell: a full-length zip, usually a hood, and cuffs and a hem that close in. On the course it is the outer layer you put on over a polo when the breeze picks up and take off when it settles.
Windbreaker, quarter-zip or rain jacket?#
A quarter-zip or half-zip is a knit mid layer: it adds warmth over a polo. A windbreaker sits on the outside as a thin woven shell, so it adds little bulk.
A windbreaker is not a rain jacket. We make no waterproof or water-resistant claims for ours, so on a wet day pack a proper rain layer as well.
Size it for a layer underneath#
Wear the polo or light layer you would actually golf in when you try one on. You want room through the shoulders and chest for a full turn, and sleeves that reach the wrist bone with your arms extended at address.
If you are between sizes, the larger one usually works better over a layer.
Why elastic cuffs and hem matter#
Loose fabric flaps in the wind and can catch through the swing. Elastic at the cuffs and hem keeps a shell close to you, and a full zip lets you open it as the round warms up.
What to wear with it#
A polo underneath, pants or joggers in a neutral color and a cap. A navy, black or forest green shell goes with everything in a golf wardrobe.
