Quarter-zip vs half-zip: which is better for golf?

Close-up of the embroidered mark on the navy Pine Half-Zip

The two names are often used interchangeably, and some brands label the same style either way. The difference is mostly the length of the zip, and that changes how the layer behaves on the course.

Zip length#

A quarter-zip has a short zip that opens to just below the collarbone. A half-zip runs further down the chest. Both pull on over the head; neither opens all the way like a jacket.

Opening up and taking it off#

A longer zip opens wider, so a half-zip lets you open the neck right up on the walk between shots and comes off over a cap more easily. A quarter-zip keeps a neater, closed line even when it is open.

How each looks over a polo#

Both sit well over a polo collar. Quarter-zips often come in lighter knits and look a little dressier; half-zips are often heavier fleece and lean more casual. The fabric weight tells you more than the name, so check it on the product page.

Which to choose#

If you mostly play cool mornings and want one layer in the bag, a heavier half-zip is the more practical piece. If you want a light layer for mild days or the office, a quarter-zip is a good option. Both are accepted at most courses that allow layers.

Questions#

Is a quarter-zip the same as a half-zip?

Not quite. Both are pullovers with a zip at the neck; a quarter-zip's zip is shorter and a half-zip's runs further down the chest. Some brands use the names loosely.

Can I wear a quarter-zip or half-zip at a private club?

Both are widely accepted over a collared shirt. If you are a guest, check the dress code or ask your host.

Do you wear a polo under a half-zip?

Usually, yes. A polo underneath means you are still in a collared shirt when the layer comes off.
