Hoodie or half-zip: which golf layer should you wear?

Clubhouse Hoodie in navy (illustrative image)

Both keep you warm on a cool morning. They differ in how they look over a collar, how easily they come off mid-round, and where your club will let you wear them.

The half-zip#

A half-zip opens at the neck, so you can vent it as you warm up and pull it off over a cap without a fight. It sits neatly over a polo collar and is accepted at nearly every course that allows layers. If you only buy one golf layer, this is usually the one.

The hoodie#

A hoodie is more relaxed and warmer around the neck with the hood down. It is perfect for the range, practice rounds, casual courses and the drive home. Some private clubs don't allow hoodies on the course, so check before you wear one to a member's club.

How to choose#

Choose the half-zip if you play a mix of courses or want one layer that works everywhere. Choose the hoodie if you mostly play casual rounds and want something you will also wear all weekend. Size for what goes underneath: a half-zip cut to go over a polo usually needs no size change; a hoodie that runs small usually means one size up.
